Best Lakes to Go Fishing in Fontana
The City of Fontana benefits from having the picturesque San Bernardino mountains as a backdrop. Outside of the city, there is rich fauna and flora for you to enjoy, with some of the most beautiful locations being lakeside. Here are some of the most exciting lake locations to go fishing in Fontana.

- The first lake is the artificial Lake Gregory, located in the San Bernardino National Forest. This area was initially known by the name of Houston Flat, before being renamed after its developer, Arthur Gregory. The lake, as well as the surrounding area, come together to make up the Lake Gregory Regional Park. For those interested in fishing here, you only need to pay a reasonable sum of $8 per person. The permit allows you to catch up to five individual fish per person, a limit which is implemented to maintain the local fish populations. Overall, this site is a great fishing spot, having been recently redeveloped with a new water park which will help to keep the kids entertained. Their dedication to environmental sustainability is also admirable.
- The next lake is Silverwood Lake. This large reservoir is located in the San Bernardino mountain area and is the highest reservoir in the California State Water Project. A tributary river that branches of from the Mojave River feeds this reservoir with water and aquatic life, making it a great place to catch freshwater fish. A ranged species of fish live in the Silverwood Lake’s waters, including Rainbow Trout, Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and Channel Catfish. It just so happens that a record-breaking Striped Bass was caught here, highlighting the fishing potential on offer. This site is an ideal fishing spot, costing only $3 for a permit from the marina dock. You can also stay overnight at one of their camping spots, giving you an excellent sunset view of the surrounding San Bernardino mountain area.
- Another picturesque lake located in the San Bernardino mountains is Jenks Lake. It is another man-made body of water located in the San Bernardino National Forest, fed by the Santa Ana River which is visible from the nearby South Fork Trail. During the months of April to October, Trout populations flourish in these waters, making it a great time to go fishing. The lake is open from 7 am until 6 pm to the public and does not permit any overnight camping, in order to protect the local fauna and flora. Be sure to visit this site during the open season between December and June.
- Next are the lake and the city, Big Bear Lake. There is only a small population of around 5000 people in this rural settlement, which is again located in the San Bernardino mountains. There is a good range of fish species in the lake, including Rainbow Trout, Common Carp, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill Sunfish, Black Crappie and Channel Catfish. The East ramp is open from April to November each year, while the West ramp is open from May until October.
